Period Formulas for Concrete Shear

چکیده
Most seismic codes specify empirical fonnulas to estimate the fundamental vibration period of buildings. Evaluated first in this paper are the fonnulas specified in present U.S. codes using the available data on the fundamental period of buildings "measured" from their motions recorded during eight California e~ quakes, starting with the 1971 San Fernando earthquake and ending w.ith the 1994 Northridge earth~u~e. It 1S shown that current code fonnulas for estimating the fundamental penod of concrete shear wall bUi1dmgs are grossly inadequate. Subsequently, an improved fonnula is developed by calibr~ting a the.oretical fonnula, deriv~ using Dunkerley's method, against the measured period data through regress10n analys1s. A]so recommended IS a factor to limit the period calculated by a "rational" analysis. such as Rayleigh's method.

A PARTICLE SWARM OPTIMIZATION ALGORITHM TO SUGGEST FORMULAS FOR THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE RECYCLED MATERIAL REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS
Reducing waste material plays an essential role for engineers in the current world. Nowadays, recycled materials are going to be used in order to manufacture concrete beams. Previous studies concluded that the currently proposed formulas to predict the flexural and shear behavior of the reinforced concrete beams were not appropriate for those manufactured by recycled materials. This study aims ...
متن کاملStepwise Regression for shear capacity assessment of steel fiber reinforced concrete beams
The addition of steel fibers into concrete improves the postcracking tensile strength of hardened concrete and hence significantly enhances the shear strength of reinforced concrete reinforced concrete beams. However, developing an accurate model for predicting the shear strength of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) beams is a challenging task as there are several parameters such as the co...
متن کاملA Macro-model for Nonlinear Analysis of 3D Reinforced Concrete Shear Walls
Architectural limitations in many situations make it necessary for the RC shear walls to be extended in plan in different directions at a single location that makes them a 3D configuration. Analysis of such walls is very challenging. In this research about 450 cases of 3D shear walls are considered with different shapes and heights. L, T and H-shape walls are studied. They are nonlinearly analy...
متن کاملSeismic Response of Reinforced Concrete Buildings: Field Challenges and Simplified Code Formulas
Building code-related literature provides recommendations on normalizing approaches to the calculation of the dynamic properties of structures. Most building codes make a distinction among types of structural systems, construction material, and configuration through a numerical coefficient in the expression for the fundamental period. The period is then used in normalized response spectra to co...
متن کاملA mathematical model for optimization of strength of concrete: A case study for shear modulus of Rice Husk Ash Concrete
Rice Husk Ash (RHA) is natural Pozzolan containing reactive silica and/or aluminum. When the material is mixed with lime in powdered form and in the presence of water, it will set and harden like cement. This work uses Osadebe’s optimization model to optimize the shear modulus of concrete made from RHA. The strengths predicted by the model are in good agreement with their corresponding experime...
